Castle challenge - #1 - Castell-y-bere

Once upton a time, a girl met a boy that was as fascinated by history as she was. One of the things that they both found very interesting, were castles. After they had visited a few, they made it their mission to visit as many as possible within the United Kingdom. Here's where the story begins, at the first castle they went to:

Castell-y-bere:

It is a native Welsh castle that Jared and I visited in March 2012. We were going to join the Keele Chapel for their away trip, but someone forgot to bring my bag with from the chapel, and therefore we could not go for a proper walk as I did not have any walking gear with me. Jared then skipped the walk (the gentleman he is) and took me for a drive to see this castle.

Compared to the Norman and Edwardian castles, the Welsh castles where much simpler in structure because of the lack of funding and architects. It was princes around in Wales that owned them vying for control of their inheritance.

Castell-y-bere was constructed by Llywelyn the Great at around 1221 and already fell in the hands of Edward I in 1283. He built it to maintain his authority over the local people, but also to defend the south-west part of the princedom of Gwynedd. Llywelyn the great died in 1282 and then his brother easily took over the Castle using it was a power base. It is said that a welsh commander was offered £80 by Edward I for his surrender. Edward ordered Castell-y-Bere to be strengthened, but in 1294 it was burned by Madog ap Llewelyn and the English abandonned the castle.
